Often in criminal cases, even when the court awards damages to the victim, significant challenges remain—such as the perpetrator having no assets, evading responsibility, or being unable to compensate for the harm caused. In such situations, the court’s judgment becomes more symbolic than practical, failing to ensure the actual protection of the victim’s interests.
Our client, a victim of a violent crime, faced exactly this situation. The harm he suffered had both emotional and financial consequences, and there was no realistic possibility of obtaining compensation from the perpetrator.
In response, the team of lawyers at the professional partnership RIDD Vilnius initiated proceedings to secure compensation from the Fund for Victims of Crime—a mechanism designed to ensure that victims’ rights to compensation are effectively enforced.
The Ministry of Justice, which administers the Fund, granted the request and awarded the client compensation from the Fund’s resources—thereby successfully protecting the victim’s interests and at least partially compensating for the damage suffered.
This case demonstrates that, even in complex situations, effective legal mechanisms exist to help victims achieve justice.
